The power of networks. Cities have a central role to play in the transition to sustainable energy. They account for over 70 % of our global energy use, and half of that goes to heating and cooling. The best way to reduce primary demand is by collectivizing it through District Heating and Cooling networks. District networks offer the least-cost and most powerful solution to scale up efficiency for climate-proof and conscience-free energy.

The UN estimates that modern district energy systems could result in a 7% reduction in overall capital investment in the power sector by 2030 – an investment savings of $795 billion by replacing the use of electricity for heating and cooling and thereby reducing peak and overall power demand. Cities, governments and independent agencies increasingly understand, and realize this potential, as demonstrated by UNEP, who launched a District Energy in Cities (DEC) initiative to facilitate our energy transition in this way.
